Spiritual Community

Christianity is relational.  We are individuals, but we are also part of the body of Christ.  Our gifts and graces are meant to be shared in community.

The Academy for Spiritual Formation creates community through shared acts of worship, learning, prayer, silence, reflection, fellowship, and covenant groups.  Community members (both lay and clergy) journey together toward a deepening relationshp with God and with each other.  This takes place in Five-Day Academies, in Two-Year Academies, and through ongoing friendships.

We invite you to join our on-line community on the Academy Facebook page.  While on-line community is no replacement for physical community, we do hope that our Facebook page and the offerings below can be tools that help draw people into and nurture a more holistic life with God and build a network of relationships that help to sustain us so that we can collectively be the presence of Christ in the world.

Spiritual Practices

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.  (Acts 2:42 NRSV)

Regular spiritual practice (both personal and communal) is fundamental to a life with God.  The Academy for Spiritual Formation helps participants develop a rhythm of spiritual practices that sustain, strengthen and encourage.  As those practices are taken into a participant's life, they provide light and leaven to others.

The ways of opening oneself to God are as varied as are God's people.  In this space, we hope to point you to resources that will help you find the spiritual practice(s) that speak to you where you are in this moment of your life.  Enjoy exploring!

What They're Reading

One of the ways we continue to grow is through spiritual reading.  In today's Christian marketplace, it can often be difficult to sort through the many options to find material that goes beyond the surface of life.  Since reading is such a significant part of the Academy, we've created the "What They're Reading" program as a way to help.   The links below provide the reading assignments for previous and current Two-Year Academy communities.  By clicking one of the links in the section below, you will be taken to an Amazon.com storefront where you can view the titles and even purchase the books (or Kindle versions when available).  When purchasing your books, you will also be supporting the Academy for Spiritual Formation with a portion of your purchase, at no additional cost to you.

The Academy Faculty and Forum Titles

These are titles written by Academy Faculty and Academy Forum members (people who have completed the Two-Year Academy).  While the Academy or The Upper Room does not necessarily endorse these titles, we are glad to offer this space to share their work with the broader Academy community
